Quick answer

To try a hair colour on your photo for free, upload a picture with your hair clearly visible to drawcue's hair color changer, pick a shade (for example copper, honey blonde or ash grey) or any custom colour, adjust the strength, optionally add an ombré fade to a second colour at the ends, compare before and after and download a PNG. The hair is found by an on-device model, so the photo is never uploaded. To change the cut itself you need a generative AI tool.

Try a new hair colour in your browser

Upload a photo with your hair visible. An on-device model finds the hair and recolours it while keeping your strands, highlights and shadows. Nothing is uploaded.

Colours

Choose a photo to start. The hair model (about 0.8 MB plus the shared engine) loads once and is cached.

Runs on the MediaPipe hair segmenter (Apache-2.0), served from drawcue. It changes colour only; very light target colours on very dark hair look flatter than a real bleach-and-tone, and fine flyaways against a busy background may be missed.

Want a new cut? This tool can't change the cut or length: changing a hairstyle's shape needs generative AI. For that, use the AI hairstyle prompts with ChatGPT or Gemini.

Overview

How the hair colour preview works

A small on-device model (MediaPipe hair segmenter) marks which pixels are hair. Each hair pixel is then recoloured relative to the average brightness of your hair, so darker strands stay darker and highlights stay bright: the texture of the original is kept and only the colour changes.

The ombré option fades from the main colour at the roots to a second colour towards the ends. It is a colour preview only. A new cut, length or fringe can't be made by recolouring pixels; that needs a generative model, which is what the AI hairstyle prompts are for.

A preview, not a promise. Real dye depends on your starting colour, porosity and whether bleach is needed. Use the preview to shortlist shades and talk them through with a colourist. Use your own photo, or a friend's with consent.

Guide

A practical guide to choosing a hair colour

Match the undertone of your skin

Warm undertones (golden, peachy skin) usually suit copper, auburn, caramel and honey; cool undertones (pink or blue tinge) suit ash, platinum, cool brown and blue-black. Try one shade from each family and compare how your face looks, not just the hair.

Stay within two shades for low upkeep

A colour one or two levels from your natural shade grows out softly. Big jumps, especially from dark to blonde or pastel, need bleach, toner and frequent root touch-ups.

Use ombré to test a bold colour

If you're unsure about pink, lavender or blonde, keep the roots near your natural colour and fade into the bold shade at the ends. Growing out is easier and the preview shows how much contrast you like.

Light changes everything

Hair colour looks warmer indoors and cooler in daylight. Check the preview on a daylight photo, and when you see your colourist, show both the before/after image and a real-life reference.

When you want a new cut too

This tool keeps your haircut. For a bob, bangs, curls or a completely new style, use the AI hairstyle prompts with a generative tool, and combine the result with a colour you liked here.

Talk to your colourist with evidence

Save two or three previews you like, plus the original photo, and bring them to your appointment. A colourist will judge whether your current colour needs lifting, how many sessions a big change takes and how much maintenance it needs. If you have box dye or henna in your hair, mention it: those change how bleach reacts, and no preview can show that. Ask for a strand test before committing to a dramatic change.

Questions

FAQ

Is the hair color changer free?

Yes, with no sign-up, watermark or limit. It runs in your browser.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The hair model (MediaPipe hair segmenter, Apache-2.0) is downloaded from drawcue once and runs locally. Your photo stays on your device.

Can it change my hairstyle or length?

No. This tool only recolours existing hair. Changing the shape of a hairstyle needs generative AI: try the AI hairstyle prompts with ChatGPT or Gemini.

Why does platinum look flat on my dark hair?

Real platinum needs heavy lightening, which changes the hair's texture too. The preview keeps your hair's darker structure, so very light shades on very dark hair look less bright than the salon result. Raise the strength or try honey blonde for a closer idea.

Part of my hair isn't coloured. What can I do?

Thin flyaways and hair against a similar-coloured background are hard to detect. Try a photo with a plainer background and more even light, and raise the soft-edges slider.

Does it work on beards?

The model is trained for head hair, so beards are recoloured only partly. It works best on scalp hair.
