We read each tool's official pricing or help page and wrote down exactly what the free tier includes, with the date and a link. If we couldn't verify it, we say so.

Quick answer
As of 2026-10-22, the most generous free option on official pages is Bing Image Creator (15 fast creations a day, then slower creations up to 200 prompts per 24 hours). Gemini and ChatGPT both include image generation on their free plans with usage limits, Leonardo gives 150 fast tokens a day, Krea 100 compute units a day, and Ideogram weekly credits for eligible free accounts. Midjourney has no free plan.
Image generation (Nano Banana 2) is available without a paid plan, within compute-based limits that refresh every 5 hours up to a weekly cap. Video generation needs a paid plan.
No free trial of paid plans; eligible free accounts get weekly credits when signing in with Google, Apple or Microsoft (amount may vary). Images are public by default.
Free tiers change constantly, and many 'best free AI' lists copy each other. For this page we opened each tool's official pricing or help page on 2026-10-22 and recorded only what it says. Every row links to its source. If a page didn't load or doesn't state a free allowance, we wrote “Check site” instead of guessing.
We also list what each tool is best at, because 'free' matters less than 'free and good for my task'. Use the 10 test prompts below to run your own side-by-side comparison: the same prompt in every tool is the fairest test.
Read the terms, not just the limits. On some free plans your images are public, or the company keeps broad rights to them (Leonardo and Ideogram say so on their pricing pages). For client or commercial work, check each tool's licence. drawcue isn't paid by any of these tools; links are plain links.

Guide
A practical guide to free AI image tools
“Free” comes in three flavours
Some tools give a daily allowance (Bing, Leonardo, Krea), some a rolling limit (Gemini refreshes every 5 hours up to a weekly cap), and some a vague 'limited' allowance (ChatGPT). Daily allowances are easiest to plan around; vague limits can stop you mid-project.
Watch the hidden costs
On several free plans your images are public or the company keeps rights to use them. Slow queues are common after the fast quota runs out. Paid-only features often include video, higher resolution and private mode.
Match the tool to the job
For your own face and photo edits, ChatGPT and Gemini are strong. For text inside images, Ideogram is built for it. For variety, Leonardo and Krea expose many models. Midjourney is still the aesthetic favourite, but it isn't free.
Test fairly
Run the same prompt in each tool, at the same aspect ratio, and judge hands, faces, text and how well it followed your instructions. Our 10 test prompts cover the common failure points.
Stack free tiers
A common free workflow: generate in one tool, fix details in another, remove the background in your browser with our free background changer, and add your watermark with our watermark tool. No subscription needed.

What is the best completely free AI image generator?
On official pages checked 2026-10-22, Bing Image Creator offers the most no-cost generations (15 fast per day, then slower creations up to 200 prompts per 24 hours). For editing your own photos, Gemini and ChatGPT's free plans are usually better.
Is Midjourney free?
No. Midjourney's official plan page lists only paid subscriptions, starting with Basic at $10/month.
Can I use free AI images commercially?
It depends on the tool. Leonardo says free-tier users get a non-exclusive licence while Leonardo keeps rights; Ideogram says it doesn't claim ownership. Always read the current terms.
Why do you say “Check site” for some tools?
Because we couldn't read a clear free allowance on the official page on the day we checked, and we don't publish guesses.
How often is this page updated?
We re-check the official pages when we update the site; the date at the top of the table shows the last check.
