Quick answer
To make an AI art toy, describe an original character (animal or creature, big head, small body, one signature accessory), then ask for 'designer vinyl art toy, matte finish, on a round display base, soft studio light'. Use ChatGPT, Gemini or Jimeng for the still, keep the same character for a series lineup or three-view sheet, and animate it in Kling for a short vertical intro video.
What is an AI art toy, and why is everyone making one?
An art toy (designer toy, 潮玩) is a small collectible figure, usually vinyl or resin, with a strong character design: a big head, a small body, a simple face and one or two signature details. Many are sold in blind boxes, where you don't know which figure of a series you'll get. AI image tools can now draft that kind of figure in seconds from a text description or from a photo of your pet or yourself.
In October 2026 the trend got a big push in China: Douyin launched the 'AI Art Toy Popularity Contest' (AI潮玩人气大赛), fronted by actress Zhao Liying, host Xie Na and Yuehua Entertainment CEO Du Hua. Anyone can enter an original AI-made toy character in a vertical video of at least 15 seconds; the top nine characters 'debut' as a group and the winner's creator gets a CNY 1 million signing fee (Sina, Oct 25, 2026). The prompts below help you design a character that holds up as a real IP: consistent from every angle, in a series and in motion.
Keep it original. Don't copy existing toy brands or cartoon characters, and don't make a figure of a real celebrity. Contests like Douyin's require an original IP, and an original design is also the only kind you can sell or print safely.
How to
How to make an AI art toy
Invent the character
Pick an animal or creature, a personality and one signature accessory (a leaf, a scarf, a beanie). Simple shapes read better as a toy.
Use toy words
Big head, small body, 'designer vinyl art toy', matte finish, round display base, soft studio light. These make it look like a product, not a cartoon.
Lock the design
Generate a front / side / back sheet (#06) so the same character stays consistent in later images.
Build the series
Ask for a lineup of the same character in different outfits (#04), a box (#05) or a plush version (#07).
Animate it
Use the still as the first frame in Kling, Jimeng or Hailuo for a vertical intro video (#10).
Guide
A practical guide to AI art toy design
Proportions make it a toy
Most art toys use a head as big as, or bigger than, the body, short limbs and a simple face. Writing 'big head, small body, chibi proportions' does more than any style name. Without it, models drift toward a normal cartoon animal.
Name the material
'Matte vinyl', 'soft-touch resin', 'glossy porcelain finish', 'translucent glow-in-the-dark' and 'flocked' each give a different collectible look. Pick one per image; mixing materials makes the figure look cheap.
One signature detail
Strong toy IPs are recognisable from one detail: a leaf on the head, a red scarf, a lilac beanie. Choose one and keep it in every prompt, so the character survives outfit changes in a series.
Shoot it like a product
A round display base, a plain pastel background, soft box lighting and a gentle shadow make the image read as a real collectible. For social posts, a tiny diorama (#09) with tilt-shift macro looks even more real.
Stay clear of other brands
Don't use the names of existing toy brands, cartoon studios or celebrities in prompts. Besides contest rules, it keeps you safe if you ever want to sell stickers, prints or a real figure.

Original blind-box figure
Example result, AI-generated
Best for: Start here if you have no character yet; it's the base design you'll reuse in the sheet, series and video prompts, so keep the one signature detail (the leaf) simple.
Studio product photo of an original blind-box art toy figure: a chubby little fox spirit with a big round head, tiny body, oversized sparkling amber eyes, a small green leaf on its head and a fluffy tail. Designer vinyl art toy, soft matte finish with subtle speckle, standing on a white round display base, pastel peach background, soft box lighting, gentle shadow, premium collectible look, 4:5.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Good for pet accounts, gifts for pet owners and custom sticker ideas; a full-body photo with clear markings keeps it looking like your pet.
Using the uploaded pet photo as the reference, keep the breed, fur colours and markings exactly. Turn the pet into a cute designer art toy figure: big head, small body, glossy round eyes, wearing a tiny knitted scarf, smooth matte vinyl finish, sitting on a round pastel display base, soft studio light, clean light grey background, collectible toy product photo, 4:5.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Use it for a profile picture, a team avatar set or a birthday gift idea; one prop tied to the person's hobby makes the figure feel personal.
Using the uploaded selfie as the reference, keep the person's hairstyle, hair colour, glasses and outfit colours recognisable. Turn them into a chibi designer art toy figure: oversized head, tiny body, simple cute face with blushing cheeks, holding one small prop that fits their hobby, soft matte vinyl finish, standing on a round mint display base, pastel studio background, soft lighting, collectible toy product photo, 4:5.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Pick this to show your character works as a whole series, the way blind boxes are sold; the secret edition gives people a reason to share.
A blind-box toy series lineup: six figures of the same original character, a round sleepy cloud-shaped bunny, each in a different outfit (raincoat, chef hat, astronaut suit, knitted sweater, pyjamas with a nightcap, winter scarf), standing in a row on white display shelves, plus one secret edition figure in translucent glow-in-the-dark material at the end. Same face and proportions in every figure, pastel lilac background, even studio lighting, collectible toy catalogue photo, 16:9.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Use it for shop listings, crowdfunding pages or a contest cover image; leaving the label blank avoids garbled AI text you'd have to fix.
Product mockup of a designer art toy blind box: a small square pastel-yellow cardboard box with a cute pattern of tiny stars and a blank label area, the lid open, an original chubby little dragon figure with a red knotted scarf standing beside it, a folded collector card showing the series as silhouettes, tissue paper, on a clean white table, soft natural daylight, e-commerce product photo, 1:1.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Make this before anything else in a series: upload the sheet as a reference later and the character stays consistent. It's also what a 3D artist will ask for.
Character turnaround sheet of an original art toy: a chubby little fox spirit figure with a leaf on its head and a fluffy tail, shown in three views side by side at the same size and height: front view, side view, back view. Neutral light grey background, flat even lighting, clean 3D render, identical proportions and colours in all three views, toy design reference sheet, no labels, 16:9.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background

Plush toy version
Example result, AI-generated
Best for: Good for gift shops, kids' brands and cosy lifestyle posts; plush versions show a character can become more than one kind of product.
A soft plush toy version of an original character: a sleepy cloud-shaped white bunny with long floppy ears and a tiny knitted lilac beanie, fuzzy short-pile fabric with visible stitching, embroidered closed eyes and pink cheeks, a small blank fabric tag, sitting on a cosy cream knitted blanket, warm window light, shallow depth of field, cute lifestyle product photo, 4:5.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Use it for Lunar New Year, Chinese cultural content and guochao merch ideas; porcelain-like gloss and gold details read as a premium festive figure.
Chinese guochao style designer art toy: an original chubby little lion-dance cub figure, red and gold mane with fluffy pom-poms, big round eyes, wearing a tiny embroidered vest with auspicious cloud patterns, holding a small round paper lantern, glossy porcelain-like finish with gold details, standing on a round carved red display base, deep jade green gradient background, studio lighting, collectible toy photo, 4:5.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Pick this for Instagram, Xiaohongshu or desk-setup content; a tiny scene with tilt-shift makes the toy look like a real photographed object.
Miniature diorama photo: an original tiny art toy figure, a chubby little fox spirit with a leaf on its head, working as a barista in a miniature cosy café set with a tiny wooden counter, a little espresso machine, cups, potted plants and warm fairy lights, tilt-shift macro photography, shallow depth of field, warm evening light, detailed and cute, on a real desk, no readable signs, 4:5.
Negative prompt: real toy brand logo, existing cartoon or franchise character, copyrighted character, celebrity likeness, text, watermark, extra limbs, deformed hands, blurry, scary, realistic human skin, cluttered background
Best for: Use it for a contest entry or a character reveal Reel; Douyin's AI art toy contest asks for a vertical video of at least 15 seconds, so plan length first.
Image-to-video, using the uploaded art toy image as the first frame: keep the figure's design, colours and proportions exactly. The figure stands on a white turntable that rotates slowly, it blinks, raises one tiny arm and waves at the camera, soft pink and blue rim lights, gentle sparkles drift in the air, pastel gradient background, smooth slow motion, locked camera, no new characters, no text, vertical 9:16, 15 seconds (or the longest your tool allows; extend or loop to reach 15 s).
AI art toys usually go wrong in three ways: the figure looks like a flat cartoon instead of a product, the character changes between images, or it drifts toward an existing brand. These notes target those problems.
Common failures and fixes
What goes wrong
How to fix it
The figure looks like a flat cartoon drawing.
Add 'designer vinyl art toy, matte finish, on a round display base, studio product photo' and ask for soft shadows under the base.
The character's face or colours change in every image.
Make the three-view sheet (#06) first, upload it as a reference and repeat the exact same character sentence in each prompt.
It looks like a famous toy brand or cartoon.
Remove any brand or franchise names, change the signature detail and keep 'existing franchise character' in the negative prompt.
Hands and paws come out with extra fingers.
Give the figure simple mitten-like paws and a prop held in both hands, or hide hands behind the body.
Box text is garbled.
Ask for a 'blank label area' and add your brand name afterwards in a design app.
The video warps the figure when it turns.
Use a slow turntable rotation of under half a turn, keep the camera locked and say 'keep the design exactly'.

How it handles this
ChatGPT
Choose square or portrait; upload a pet or selfie photo and ask for one change at a time (toy proportions, then outfit, then base).
Very clean product renders; may soften fur markings, so repeat 'keep markings exactly'.
Gemini
Upload the three-view sheet as a reference for every new image; describe only what changes (outfit, pose, scene).
Good at keeping the same character across edits; strong for series lineups.
Jimeng
Pick 3:4 or 9:16; write the Chinese prompt and put the negative prompt in its own field; use the same image for the video step.
Cute 3D toy look and guochao details come out well.
Kling
Image-to-video, 9:16; start with 5 or 10 s, then extend; add the negative prompt and keep motion small.
Smooth turntable and wave motions; big camera moves can distort the figure.

The 'AI Art Toy Popularity Contest' (AI潮玩人气大赛) on Douyin, launched in October 2026 by Zhao Liying, Xie Na and Du Hua. Entrants post an original AI-made toy character in a vertical video of at least 15 seconds with the contest hashtag; the top nine are chosen by public vote and the first-place creator gets a CNY 1 million signing fee, according to Sina's report. Check the official contest page on Douyin for the current rules.
Which AI tool is best for art toys?
For the still image, ChatGPT, Gemini and Jimeng all do clean vinyl-toy renders; Gemini and ChatGPT are good at keeping the same character across edits. For the video, Kling, Jimeng and Hailuo animate the still well.
How do I keep the same character in every image?
Make a three-view sheet first (#06), then upload it as a reference in every later prompt and repeat the same short character description word for word.
Can I turn my pet or my own photo into a toy?
Yes. Prompts #02 and #03 use your photo. Upload a clear, well-lit photo, and keep the line that preserves fur markings or hairstyle so it still looks like them.
Can I 3D print or sell my AI art toy?
An AI image is not a 3D model. You'd need a 3D artist or an image-to-3D tool to make a printable file. Before selling, make sure the design is original and check the AI tool's terms for commercial use.
Is it free?
ChatGPT, Gemini, Jimeng and Kling offered free use or daily credits at the time of writing. Limits change, so check each tool's current plan.
